An A-line skirt is a basic skirt that sits snugly at the waist, is fitted at the hips and thighs but does not cling and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the impression of the shape of a capital letter A.  A-line skirts are designed to flatter any figure, that is, if you know how to choose the right fit.

When choosing an A-line skirt, make sure it fits your waist properly; it shouldn't be too tight or too loose. Too tight in the waist and it will only accentuate problem areas like your lower stomach or hips. If the skirt is too loose, your body shape will become lost, defeating the whole purpose of the skirt.

Also pick the right length for your body. Length is always important when choosing any skirt. Buy an A-line skirt that hits at, or just below, the knees for the most flattering length for all body types.

A-line are known to be very flattering on   pear-shaped, because this style balances out heavier hips and thighs. The hem usually falls just below the knee, but you can vary it depending on your leg shape. This style is not very flattering for thin, narrow-hipped women .

The A-line could also be paneled, slimming the hips. Depending on the choice of fabric, these skirts can be casual or formal enough for office wear. Close-toed shoes with pointy heels, strappy heeled sandals, ankle boots and wedge heels all work perfectly with these skirts. It is best not to wear these skirts with flats because they tend to make your legs look much heavier.
